Perfectly Me in action: building community based on kindness

What’s the secret to good health, happiness, and fulfillment? According to our nation’s former top doctor Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, a strong sense of community is a needed prescription in today’s world where loneliness and loss of connection threaten the health and well-being of millions of Americans.

Community connects us - it’s the feeling of togetherness and fellowship that’s rooted in genuine care and understanding for oneself and others. It’s created in our family bonds, with friends, and with those who we spend time with in our everyday lives. Community is built wherever people look after one another and seek shared goals and interests. Without community, people can feel isolated or misunderstood, which can have devastating effects on mental and physical health.

Our Children’s Need for Community

Children especially need community for their well-being and sense of identity. Their relationships at birth are crucial foundations of care and nurturing. As their world expands to extended family members and friends - their sense of community builds, preparing them for relationships they will make throughout their childhood and adult lives – from playgroups to preschool and beyond. But the ability to connect to others with kindness and empathy is one that requires practice, especially in young kids whose hearts and minds are still developing. Our role as caregivers and educators is to help young people learn how to manage their own emotions and build positive relationships through their mindset and behaviors.

Helping Kids Be Their Best Selves

Perfectly Me was founded nearly 18 years ago with the mission to support children in their ability to love themselves and others so they can live in a kinder, better world. Through our camps and school programs, we give kids the tools to develop the courage, compassion, resilience, and empathy to move through the world as their own superheroes, reflecting the qualities needed to build community and positive relationships. By centering children’s herovalues development and well-being in our programming, we’re encouraging strengths that will last a lifetime in their pursuit and attainment of community and connection.

How Perfectly Me Helps Strengthen And Support Community:

1. We encourage self-love and acceptance To love others, it’s essential to love oneself. We encourage children to cultivate self-love to embrace what makes them unique without judgment and to build the self-confidence and resilience to recognize their own self-worth.

2. We show kindness and empathy for others

Showing care for others requires empathy. We give children the skills to forge lasting friendships and connections through compassion and kindness. These are muscles that need training and we offer programs that put kindness front and center.

3. We create fun experiences and shared sense of belonging for all

With us, kids can come as they are. Our programs offer fun and adventure through sports, activities, science exploration, games, and more in an environment that promotes belonging and acceptance. Supported by self-love and empathy for others, kids are free to enjoy activities in fellowship with their community of like-minded kids and families.

Being Intentional In Our Pursuit Of Community

This year, Perfectly Me is doubling down on our commitment to help children and their families build and maintain community. We’ve launched a new Perfectly Me Community and Family Connection Guide, which helps inspire families through monthly service and community projects. We’re also expanding our summer camp offerings at our Roland Park Country School location where we’ll be offering more camps than ever before, including SuperHero Camp, KindergartenHero Camp, SportsHero Camp, and STEMHero Camps. In 2025, we’re expanding our in-person events and providing more opportunities for camp friends and their families to get together. We’re inspired this year to be more intentional in our pursuit of community – and hope you’ll join us in our journey to bring Perfectly Me superhero values to more and more children in our area.

Kindness begins with us, and together, we can create a community that inspires others.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
